Tips For Selecting a Healthcare Marketing Agency

Medical Marketing has drastically evolved over the past few decades.  It’s hard to believe that in the not-so-distant past, doctors could graduate from medical school, set up a practice and hang a shingle.  They didn’t have to worry about healthcare marketing strategies or finding a healthcare marketing agency.  They relied on a good location, word of mouth and the ever-present need for medical attention to build their practice.  That’s no longer the case.

Today there is strong competition to gain a foothold in the medical care landscape.  Doctors have come to accept that they need to embrace good marketing principals when they are building a successful medical practice.

A healthcare marketing agency is well versed in the challenges of medical marketing. Here are a few tips to help you select the right agency.

Size Matters…or does it?

Is it better to work with a big agency or a smaller one? That depends on your needs and the type of working relationship you would like to have.  Bigger agencies have a large staff and a lot of talent available at the ready.  They also might be a bit pricier because it costs more to maintain a larger organization.

Smaller agencies tend to be more cost effective and can offer a more personal relationship.  With a smaller staff there might be some limitations, but usually there is a plan in place to cover every need.

Fresh or Established

New agencies open every few years or more depending on where you are located.  It’s hard to decide between a 20-year-old organization and one that’s only been around for a few years.  There are pros and cons to each.

An established agency has a proven track record and loads of experience. However, they might not be up to date on current trends such as digital media.  A newer agency will offer a contemporary set of skills but will still be proving themselves in the marketplace.  Take a good look at what the agencies have to offer and consider a good mix of both.  Peruse their website and look at their portfolio of work. If you like what they did for other companies,  it’s a good indication of how they may fulfill your vision.

You Get What You Pay For

It’s tempting to go with the lowest price, especially when it comes to selecting something you are not very familiar with.   In the case of selecting a medical marketing team, there’s a lot more you need to consider beyond price.  Do they have a proven track record?  Are they willing to come to your office for meetings or are you expected to come to them?  Do you have a firm breakdown of what the price includes?  Make sure you understand the fine print regarding costs before you allow that to be a determining factor.

Gut Check

Sometimes you just get a good read on something.  Meet with the agencies you are selecting between and try to get a sense of what it would be like to work with them.  Having a positive relationship will net you better results every time.  If you have a good sense that you’d work well with one particular team, then you probably should select them.  If you have other concerns such as price or timing, be open and upfront about it.  For example, you could say, “We’d really like to work with your team but we are concerned that the cost is a little higher than we expected.  Is there any way we can bring that down?”  Usually, the agency can find a way to adjust the costs to work within your budget.  The same goes for timelines and other potential concerns.
